Forward Glossary of Terms
We want to provide a
plain English guide to some of the terms used to describe the
work of the Local Strategic Partnership. The definitions have
been collected from a variety of government websites and the
Plain English Campaign site.
A2 and A8 Countries
A2
The A2 are the two countries that joined the EU on 1 January
2007: Bulgaria and Romania.
A8
The A8 are the eight Central and Eastern European countries that
joined the EU on 1 May 2004: Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The A8 does not include the two other countries that joined on
that date: Cyprus and Malta.
Citizens
The term "citizens" in its broadest
sense includes residents, service users, customers, clients,
consumers, businesses, local communities and community and
voluntary organisations.
Community Cohesion
Community cohesion is what must happen to enable different
groups of people to get on well together. The aim of a community
cohesion initiative is to appreciate and to celebrate diversity
between people in local communities, to promote understanding
and reduce hostilities.
Community Strategy
Local authorities produce a community strategy plan that
aims to improve social, economic and environmental wellbeing in
their areas. The plans are the result of consultation with local
residents, businesses and third sector organisations.
Iterate
To say something again, once or
several times
Local Area Agreement (LAA)
A 3 year agreement between central
government and a local area. The agreement sets out the priority
issues for local action and what the partners in a Local
Strategic Partnership will deliver.
Local Strategic Partnerships (LSP)
A partnership body that includes the
local authority, statutory services, businesses and third sector
organisations. The partnerships work together to deliver more
effective public services to people in local areas.
Milestone
A well-defined and significant step
toward achieving a target, output or impact. It allows tracking
of progress
Outcomes
The changes, benefits, learning or other effects that result
from what a project or organisation offers or provides.
Outputs
The products, services or facilities a project or organisation
offers or provides to its users.
Performance Indicator
Measure of results compared to what
was planned.
Stakeholders
People who have an interest in an organisation or process
including users, customers, partners, employees, residents,
owners, funders, government and regulators.
‘Stretch targets’
Targets which go beyond government
requirements.
Sustainable communities
Places where people want to live and
work, now and in the future. They meet the needs of existing and
future residents, are sensitive to their environment, and
contribute to a high quality of life. They are safe and
inclusive, well planned, built and run. They offer equality of
opportunity and good services for all.
Sustainable development
A process of development that allows economic growth without
damaging the environment or natural resources. It is about
creating attractive, prosperous, vibrant, safe and strong
communities where people want to live, work and do business.
Target
A defined level of achievement which
a project sets itself to meet in a specific period of time.
Third Sector
Third sector organisations include
voluntary and community organisations, charities, social
enterprises, faith organisations, cooperatives and mutuals, and
housing associations.
Vision
The ideal state a project or
organisation wants the world to be in. What the world will look
like, if the project or organisation is successful in achieving
its mission and aims. |
